How about we stop saying, “Don’t cry”. And How about we stop saying, “Don’t cry”.

And instead, say, “It’s ok. Let it all out. I’m here for you”.

Even with the best intentions, preventing someone from experiencing big, feel bad emotions, like sadness, doesn’t make them more resilient or stronger, instead it does the opposite.

Its just like how you can’t become physically stronger if you put the weight down as soon as it starts feeling heavy.

You have to hold on to it and do the reps if you want to build your muscles.

Emotional resilience is also a muscle. And, you have to do the reps to build it up and make it stronger.

Sitting with the emotion, understanding it, and allowing it pass through you not only helps it move on more quickly, but it helps you become stronger so that you can more easily handle the big, uncomfortable emotions.

So, is crying helpful? Yes, absolutely.

In fact, studies have found many benefits. For example:
- crying helps self-soothing
- crying releases endorphins which can help ease physical and emotional pain
- the oxytocin released while crying can give you a sense of calm and wellbeing
- physiological sighs (the type of breathing) that occurs while crying increases oxygen and reduces carbon dioxide, reducing stress
- crying helps regain emotional equilibrium
- the hormones found in your tears vary in type and quantity depending on the reason you are crying - sad, angry, grief, happiness, etc.

Building emotional resilience gives you the ability to appreciate the fullness and richness of all that life has to offer and move through it with a greater sense resilience and presence.

Side note: if a big, feel bad emotion stays for an extended period of time without decreasing then yes, professional support may be required. Otherwise, sit with the emotion and let it come and go naturally.

It’s good to be back in a school again! It’s was a hot one, but had a blast helping the students develop leadership for the year ahead.
We all have negative, unhelpful self talk from tim We all have negative, unhelpful self talk from time to time, so don’t judge or criticize yourself for it.

Instead, notice it, remind yourself that it’s unhelpful, and let it go.

Then, replace it with real, positive, confidence building memories from the past.
